The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is proud to announce the following events and programs for July 2014:

 

Register Today for Maker Camp at the Science Center!
Every Saturday in July

Palm Beach LED (Laboratory of Experimentation and Design)has partnered with the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium to bring Maker Camp to Palm Beach County this summer! Maker Camp will be held at the Science Center every Saturday in July from 10am to 2pm, starting on July 5th. Maker Camp is intended for youth between the ages of 10-14 and will be FREE to attend. Maker Camp will cover the following curriculum each week:

  • Week 1 (July 5th) - Introduction to electronics and soldering
  • Week 2 (July 12th) - Introduction to microcontrollers
  • Week 3 (July 19th) - Introduction to LEGO Mindstorms (basic robotics & programming)
  • Week 4 (July 26th) - Introduction to 3d printing

Parents Night Out
July 11 6pm-10pm

Drop your children off for a fun night of science! The event includes a hands-on science experiment, a science-related craft, exploration of the Science Center, pizza dinner and a planetarium show. For children ages 4-12. Cost is $30 per child (each additional child is $15). To register, please call (561) 832-2026 or email programs@sfsciencecenter.org.

Laser Concerts
July 12 at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30pm

Enjoy all the musical classics from such legends as Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley and more while lasers, stars and other special effects have guests dancing in their seats.  This event takes place every second Saturday of the month.  Laser Concerts: $8 members, $10 non-members For more information about laser concert schedules, please call (561) 832-1988.

Alien Invasion Nights at the Museum
Friday July 25 6pm-9pm

An alien invasion is headed your way! Make your own Galaxy Goo and learn about the solar system, the night sky, galaxies, and the universe with fun hands-on activities. On the last Friday night of each month from 6-9 PM, guests of all ages can enjoy extended hours of exploration at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium.  Each Night at the Museum is a different theme, which includes various interactive science crafts, activities, entertainment, exhibits, planetarium shows and a chance to view the night sky in Palm Beach County’s only public observatory!  Dress up to match the theme for a special prize! Admission is $5.50 for members $12.50 for adults $11 seniors and $9 for children under 3-12. Science on Tap
July 24 8pm

From flipping your hair to sitting up straight, what about these behaviors makes us seem more “attractive” to a potential mate? Science is sexy and the next installment of Science on Tap wants to prove just that with the topic with a look into the "Laws of Attraction". Science on Tap is held at O'Shea's irish Pub in downtown West Palm Beach, 531 Clematis St. Free event. For more information, call (561) 832-1988.

 

GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science)
July 29, Aug. 26, Sept. 30 5pm-7pm

Girls are active, imaginative, and unique. They are natural scientists! The Science Center’s new GEMS club offers girls the perfect opportunity to learn and grow as they discover the exciting world of STEM while having tons of fun along the way! Each session of Gems Club will also feature a female guest speaker who has made a successful career pursuing a career in a scientific field. Gems Club takes place on the last Tuesday of every month beginning on Tuesday, July 29 from 5pm-7pm. This is a free event for all girls in grades 3-8 and registration is required. Check out the exciting summer themes:

  • July 29- Roaring Rockets- Blast off with us during this high-flying activity! Learn about rocketry and build your own rocket to launch with your friends.
  • Aug. 26- Amazing Engineers- Budding builders will test their ingenuity by designing and creating a bridge made entirely of candy.
  • Sept. 30- Forensic Frenzy- Put the pieces together during this CSI- inspired activity.  Collect evidence and compare your findings as our expert team of educators lead you on an adventure through Forensic Science.

e4 Life: Green Health and Wellness Expo
July 26th 10am-5pm

The Science Center will host its 4th annual Green, Health and Wellness Expo, which will feature local educators, businesses and community leaders sharing useful tips and tricks about how to live a healthier and greener lifestyle. The public is invited to “come to their senses” as they TASTE fresh, organic, and healthy snack samples, FEEL the comfort of natural well-being products, SEE and HEAR what natural resources are available to help promote a healthier lifestyle and SMELL the wonders of natural, organic and healthy products.  Event is included with paid admission.
